10/25

Piano season is back!

I’m beyond happy to share that the Prequel series of solo piano recordings will continue by the end of November. This time, I’ll be releasing my music independently (yay!). More about that in my little novel below. Well, the topic is pretty close to my heart after all.

In other news: a new song with Vienna’s very own Jōshy just dropped, along with a street rap/pop album I produced for Universal Production Music. It even includes a single by one of Berlin’s most hyped underground rappers on one of my favorite beats I’ve made this year.

Buckle up – autumn is here, and we’re diving right in!

___________________________

Yes, that’s the face I make when sharing with you that I’m continuing the Prequel series — independently. After working with labels from Belgium (Prequel 1–3), Denmark (Silent Fjords), and Germany (Nocturne), I decided it’s time to finally go my own way with the upcoming releases.

Some perspective

Don’t get me wrong. All those labels are run by great, passionate people. But finally setting up my own Bandcamp and releasing music I’ve fully created myself — from composition to recording, mixing, mastering, artwork, press release texts — just feels right. Especially now that more listeners are moving away from evil Spotify. No judgment if you stay for the algorithm or interface. Still, Bandcamp truly supports artists. Even with their cut, one sale there equals an insane amount of streams.

Just to give you some perspective: my Bandcamp page went online, I posted about it in my Instagram story, and someone bought Prequel 1 right away, even deciding to pay €15 instead of the €5 minimum. Big up. That’s how it’s done.

Some math

To be fair, I don’t get the full €15. Bandcamp takes 15%, PayPal a small fee, so I end up with €11.94. Still great, because under a typical label deal (60/40 with the label, which has its own 80/20 split with the distributor), I’d only see about 32% of what Spotify pays after taxes. To earn the same €11.94, I’d need around 10,000–19,000 streams and since payouts usually start at €100, that’s roughly 100,000–140,000 streams.

Add months for the money to reach the distributor, another year for it to trickle down to the label, and yet another before it reaches me — and you see why Bandcamp, paying me instantly, feels so much better.

Some conclusion

So, I’d rather have one dedicated person spend whatever they can or want, actually enjoy my music, and own it forever — instead of chasing empty playlist clicks, streaming bots, and meaningless numbers. No shame at all if you listen on your favorite streaming platform — it still helps a lot and all of us stream music, no need to pretend. I just felt like taking the opportunity to show the reality behind it, and why I’ll be focusing on Bandcamp for my upcoming independent releases.

With that being said, Prequel 1 is already online and the other two EPs are going to follow each week up until a new single drops on the 21st of November. Possibly a little earlier on Bandcamp hehe

Earlier this year, I got a call on a Monday at noon, just after returning to Berlin. I was asked if I’d be free to produce an entire album — within the next 13 days. Loving a good challenge, I was totally down. I teamed up with Cologne-based producer Wombats, and we started reaching out to artists. After all, the challenging part isn’t the production — it’s getting writers and artists into the studio on super short notice, sitting together, and creating not just music, but a vibe where everyone feels safe and seen.

I ended up producing 7 out of 12 songs, including the single with Johno37 and NALI — with Johno being one of the most talked-about underground artists of the season.

The album request came from Universal Production Music, who were pitching “street rap” for a big TV show and realized they didn’t have enough authentic material. So, we made some for them. They didn’t want to share any details about what show they were working on, but time will tell. One way or another, the songs will stay in their catalogue forever — to be used in TV, ads, YouTube clips, or movies. So keep your eyes and ears open — they might pop up somewhere unexpected on your screen soon.

Also, the songs themselves turned out really great — some serious bangers in there. I’m very proud to have worked on this project and grateful for the fantastic artists I got to collaborate with. Enough talking — pick your favorite:

Jōshy – Schrödingers Konto

It must have been July when Vienna’s very own Jōshy visited me at mine, and we quickly cooked up this banger that he recently dropped. “Schrödingers Konto” is basically a song about how he’s terrible at handling money — playing with the image of Schrödinger’s cat in the form of his bank account. If you speak German, there are some hilarious bars in there, and I’m super curious to see where the tune might end up. Check it out:

09/25

Of Sunshine & Garbage Trucks

First of all, thanks so much for the amazing feedback we got for our “Silent Fjords” album. It seemed to have resonated as much with you as with us, and that’s always a wonderful thing to experience. Up to this point, it has been used as a soundtrack for a baseball documentary in the US and by various Scandinavian national TV stations within the first few weeks after release, so keep your eyes and ears open. You might not expect where it pops up next 🙂

It’s a little late for a September update, but here we are, and there are two things I’d love to share with you before we move into October. Both of them have a slightly longer back story than usual, so let’s jump right into it!

Mujo x Shubangi – Sonne

[kalla RMX]

Sometimes it all comes together in the least expected way: Shubangi’s band was my first musical encounter outside of university after I started studying back in 2013. We played super fun shows, appeared on live TV, and in big venues. Through her and the project, I got to know a lot of other people, and somehow most of her band ended up being the band of the rapper AzudemSK – including me.

Fast forward about 6 years later: Mujo appears in Münster’s hip hop realm, and we quickly become friends. During COVID, we started meeting more regularly in a nearby park for Arabic coffee (for which I’d provide my flat’s Korean gas cooker) and German cakes to talk about music, his upbringing in Syria, or life itself. We started working on music, and even though both of us loved what we were up to, we somehow didn’t really release any of it (except for a few songs I co-produced, but those don’t count here).

Then, earlier this year, Mujo asked me if I’d like to contribute to a project he was working on with Shubangi — an EP called “Sonne” (Sun). He was envisioning a danceable remix, and I’d get any artistic freedom I’d need. A best-case scenario, honestly. I started producing while waiting in a doctor’s waiting room for nearly 50 minutes and ended up producing 3 demos that week — all in the same project. I kept feeling like more was possible and squeezed the last bits out of that bassline, the sample chop (a sample Mujo gave me back in 2020), and those organic, grooving drums.

Long story short — it’s out now. I think you might like it 🙂

Sing mit mir –

Die schönsten Stadtlieder

You won’t believe it, but yeah, I actually produced some kids’ music — and it turned out to be quite a fun experience. It’s not trashy, cheesy, or terrible in any way – just kind of cute and easygoing. To be fair, I only produced three out of the 21 songs on this album, but I’m still pretty stoked about being part of this project. Much love to my friend Linda, who wrote and sang on the entire album!

Ever heard of Tonies? No? Me neither, before working on this one. But apparently, they’re the hottest thing around for kids these days. Here’s a little abstract: A Toniebox is a screen-free audio player designed for children. Instead of using buttons or apps, kids place small figurines called Tonies on top of the box — each figure unlocks specific audio content like stories, songs, or educational material. The concept makes listening interactive and playful, while being safe and easy for kids to use on their own.

Now guess what: this album, featuring all kinds of songs about the city, came out as a cute little garbage-truck Tonie. Our first single, Kira Kehrmaschine, quickly hit nearly a million clicks on YouTube within the first few weeks — which I honestly didn’t remotely expect. But the market for kids’ music that doesn’t totally suck seems huge.

One more fun story: while working on a totally different contemporary street-rap project, a manager looked into my “produced by” playlist on Spotify. The song that seemed to make the biggest impression on him wasn’t a 7-digit-clicks rap track from the States or some high-end produced pop music. It was Kira Kehrmaschine — because apparently, he was listening to it day in and day out with his little daughter, and he loved it. Well.

So August turned into… this?

A new piano album in collaboration with a Danish vocalist, and just one week later an uptempo contemporary German rap album with a rapper – August couldn’t have been more contrasting. Alongside those releases, plus a single in my favorite production style, I also got to share some tour recap videos from the shows I played with Lai Raw back in July. August was supposed to be chill, but somehow it turned into… whatever this was. And I loved it 🙂

Samuel Bosch x Thit Lin – Silent Fjords

As promised in last month’s issue – a new piano album is finally here. I joined forces with Danish vocalist Thit Lin and produced a full album for the boutique production music label A New Story. Since the music is primarily created for media productions of all kinds (Netflix shows, cinema, TV, and so on), this is pure film music – just without the film being made yet.

I’m super curious to see where the music will end up. Even before any contracts were signed, exciting things were already happening behind the scenes, so I’m looking forward to keeping you updated on that. Until then, enjoy some dreamy, Scandi-influenced neoclassical piano-vocal music – and create your own movie in your mind.

Allanwhy x *maliiik x kalla – Zippers

By far my favorite style I’ve been producing in recent years has been the soulful, hip-hop–organic, jazzy tracks with *maliiik – and more recently with allanwhy as well. While working on the album with *maliiik (yeah, I think it’s finally done by now, btw), he invited allanwhy to join one of our sessions – and this gorgeous piece was born. It’s everything you’d want it to be – and I even get to play a super sexy synth solo, hehe.

DÖNER3EURO x König Roland – Drip Season

Last year I got a call from Warner asking me to produce a production music album with rap vocals in the style of today’s contemporary German uptempo, techno-esque hip hop/rap records that are currently trending. Leaving the artistic ego at the door is one of my favorite things to do sometimes, because it lets me step outside my usual lane and explore new creative horizons. Even if the call feels a little silly at first, something good always comes out of it – and it’s super fun to see your work pop up on TV, in Netflix shows, or in ads.

So I grabbed a good friend of mine – a very talented songwriter who goes by “Mr. Me” when doing his own thing – and together we wrapped up the 10 songs pretty quickly. After leaving no cliche untouched, I mastered the project, and now it’s online for everyone to party to!
